hello reader, welcome to the last tuesday of the month. for those just tuning in, this is the official supplemental reader of the critically acclaimed rock group drug country. if you were trying to find the substack about actual drugs in the country- you have taken a wrong turn somewhere…
well i guess it’s thanksgiving week over here in drug country- assuming it’s the same for you dearest reader. i imagine you are also finding it as hard as i am to find things to be thankful for right now. despite being a sovereign nation, drug country does exist in the parameters of “america” and boy, america reared it’s ugly head this november. we find ourselves in a time where we don’t know who to trust or who we are safe with, neighbors waving at you and then turning around and using their vote to punish women, people of color, trans and queer communities, the poor, disabled, incarcerated, the list grows and grows. dear reader- find your people and love them, deeply. defend your people with a ferocious spirit, you are needed more than ever now.
it feels silly to care about things like art and music in times of darkness, but honestly i think it is sillier to NOT care about these things during times such as these. quit your job, start a band, write a book, make a substack no one reads, there’s no time like now. if the administration is fraught with sick and twisted brutes who care about capital over humanity, provide an abundance of humanity to suffocate the sick fucks. gonzo rant over, but you get what i mean.
anyways- drug country news, right right. we announced a series of very intimate and quiet shows in january. hitting some NC spots and then charlottesville on inauguration day, what could go wrong? i am very excited for these shows. it will be a quiet duo set of myself and known associate of drug country garrett whitlow. we have been working on the duo format a ton, making it feel complete and not like two punks who can’t really play guitar playing because the drummer wasn’t available. i think it’s really special, really looking forward to seeing a bunch of familiar faces in spots i haven’t been to in quite a while. dates below:
otherwise, all is the same in the country of drug. working on songs all the time, trying to record them when i have time so i can build a plethora of crowd pleasing hits as i am known to do. so really, i guess when i think of it, i am thankful for music. and you, dear reader. signing off now, be good to yourselves and be good to your people. we make it out of darkness one day at a time. forever yours in the wild kindness.
now listening in drug country: smog “knock knock”/ j dilla “dillatronic” / sparklehorse “it’s a wonderful life” / circle takes the square “as the roots undo”
xoxo JR
